David Marvin “Bones” Bakkestuen, 63, died August 29, 2023 at his home in rural Viroqua near the family farm where he grew up. David was born October 12, 1959, in La Crosse to Marvin and Caroline Bakkestuen. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chaseburg. David graduated from Viroqua High School in 1977, and then attended WWTI. He was married to Tammy Yanske on June 18th, 1983 and they were later divorced. He worked at DHI- Dairy Testing from 1981 – 88, Agri-King for several years, farmed on Chaseburg ridge from 1990 - 1996, and for the last 25 years, David has driven truck for Schilling Paper. David won Grand Champion on his black angus steer, Dynamite at the Vernon County Fair. He was able to buy his first car with the sale. David loved NASCAR, snowmobiling, traveling, and playing pool and was a member of the Friends of Chaseburg.
David is survived by his children Adam (Beverly) Bakkestuen of Westby, Ryan Bakkestuen (Brianna Miller) of Westby, Brittany (Corey) Wilson of Peoria, AZ; 1 sister Cherlyn (Bryce) Johnson of McCormick, South Carolina; 5 grandchildren; Dakota, Mason, Owen, Aubrey Bakkestuen, and Jett Wilson, his special friend, Jenny Wuolle, a niece, nephew, many friends, and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents and fiancé Denise Rundhaugen.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday September 5th, 2023 at the St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chaseburg. Rev. Steven Oldre will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley and at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to a charity of choice. Condolences may be given at selandsfuneralhome.com.
