Mathilda E. Hass

Mathilda Evelyn Hass, 90, of Westby, passed away Saturday morning May 6, 2017 at the Bethel Home in Viroqua. She was born June 20, 1926 to Albert and Lena (Erickson) Fladhammer. She was the youngest of six children. Mathilda grew up on a farm and attended Enterprise School. At 19 she married Edward Hass at the Zion Lutheran Church, rural Viroqua on June 8, 1945. Mathilda and Edward were married for 60 years. They farmed west of Viroqua for many years before moving to Stoddard. In 1970 they bought a house in Westby where Mathilda lived until she became a resident of the Bethel Home. Mathilda loved her flower beds and garden. She spent many hours in her yard. Hard work was not a stranger to her. She would also spend many hours in her kitchen canning all the vegetables and fruits for winter. She loved to bake and was well known by friends for her rhubarb cake and banana nut bread. She took great pride in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include three children, Ernest (Sandy) Hass of Cashton, Kenneth (Carole) Hass of Sparta and Ruth (Gary) Bjornstad of Stoddard; six grandchildren, Ricky (Shelly) Hass, Randy (Theresa) Hass, Ronda Pruett, Paula Leaveck (Patrick Brennan), Mark (Michelle) Hendrickson and Frederick Hendrickson; 13 great grandchildren, Samantha, Joshua and Alyssa Hass, Tanner (Mary) Leaveck, Logan Leaveck, Darien, Nicholas, Austen, Jacelyn, Evan and Alex Hendrickson, J.J. Cross, and Robin (Nick) Conrad; 7 great great grandchildren, Aubrey Leaveck, Harley Pruett, Lucille Leaveck, Justin Conrad, Tyler, Brianna and Aubrey Conrad and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, three brothers, Lawrence, Tilman and Alfred Fladhammer; two sisters Caroline and Lillian Hanson and a son-in-law Dennis Hendrickson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday May 9, 2017 at the English Lutheran Church in Viroqua. Rev. Neil Behm will officiate with burial in the St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in Chaseburg. Friends may call on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley and at the church on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until service time.
