Mary L. King, 88, of Coon Valley died Monday January 2, 2017 at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse with her daughter by her side. She was born December 10, 1928 to Alfred and Eva (Eilertson) Hoff in La Crosse. Mary was confirmed and a lifelong member of the Middle Coon Valley Lutheran Church, rural Chaseburg. She graduated from Central High School in La Crosse, Vernon County Normal School and LaCrosse State Teacher's College (UW-L). Mary taught for several at Cliffside School in Chaseburg, Shawano, Eau Claire and Viroqua Schools. She was married to Jim King on August 20, 1960. She then farmed near Coon Valley with her husband for many years.

Mary was a member of the Middle Coon Valley Lutheran Church where she was active in WELCA, quilting and was a former Sunday school teacher. She was also a long time member of the Chaseburg American Legion Post #202 Auxiliary. Mary enjoyed gardening, canning, attending country music concerts and was well known for her excellent baking. She loved spending time with her family especially her grandson, Haakon.

Survivors include her husband, Jim; daughter, Amy (Keith) Mathison, grandson, Haakon Mathison; Keith's parents, Carly and Phyllis Mathison all of Coon Valley and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Clarence Hoff and 3 sisters, Sylvia Thompson, Dorothy Smithback and Randi Aalgaard.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday January 4, 2017 at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley with a prayer service at 7 p.m. officiated by Rev. Margaret Eiben Hoversten. A private burial will be in the Middle Coon Valley Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Middle Coon Valley Lutheran Church.
