Layton H. "Boob" Nelson, 84, of Coon Valley died unexpectedly Tuesday August 30, 2011 at his home. He was born October 2, 1926 in La Crosse to Henry and Ruth (Moen) Nelson. He was baptized and confirmed at the Coon Valley Lutheran Church. Boob graduated from Westby High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946 as a Paratrooper in the 101st Airborne spending much of his time in the Philippines and Japan. He was married to Betty Johnson on June 1, 1948 at the Coon Valley Lutheran Church by Rev. Kvamme.
During high school Boob drove milk truck for Erickson Transport. Following his service in the U.S. Army he worked for a short time at the Swift Co. in La Crosse. For the next 35 years Boob was the Coon Valley rural Mail Carrier. He also worked part time for his uncle Alton Moen at the Moen Feed Mill in Coon Valley and for Tri-State Monument Co. in La Crosse. Boob was a life long member of the Coon Valley Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council, a 65 year member of the Coon Valley American Legion Post #116, a long time volunteer at Norskedalen and a former member of the Coon Valley Village Board, Coon Valley Fire Department and Viroqua Country Club. Boob enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren; was an avid baseball player and golfer for many years, and also enjoyed football and the Packers.
Survivors include his wife Betty, 2 children Terry (Marcie) of Coon Valley and Sue (Dennis) Dewsnap of DePere; 4 grandchildren Tracy (Matt) Stellner and Troy (Lindsay) Nelson of Coon Valley; Chris (Robbi) Dewsnap of DePere and Nick (Lindsey Kreske) Dewsnap of Waukesha; 7 great grandchildren Macy and Mackenzie Stellner, Livvy and Griffin Nelson, Logan and Nathan Dewsnap and Ava Dewsnap; a sister Delaine Erickson of Coon Valley and a brother Michael (Sandy) Nelson of La Crosse and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers Leighton in infancy; Leonard "Chick" and James "Bushel"; and 2 sisters Henrietta Valeo and Mary Ann Trempt.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday September 3, 2011 at the Coon Valley Lutheran Church. Rev. Mitzi Miyamoto will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Coon Valley American Legion Post #116. Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley and at the church on Saturday from 2 p.m. until service time. Memorials may be given to the Coon Valley Lutheran Church, Coon Valley American Legion Post #116 or Norskedalen.
