Lawrence R. White

Lawrence R. White, 90, of Viroqua, died Sunday January 16, 2011 in Madison. He was born March 12, 1920 to George and Dana (Woods) White in Viroqua. In 1938 Lawrence joined the U.S. Army National Guard and was assigned to the 120th Field Artillery Division. He served during World War II in the South Pacific and was discharged May 26, 1945. Lawrence married Harriet Skolos on September 24, 1947 in Dubuque, Iowa. The couple farmed most of their married life in Liberty Pole and then Westby. Lawrence then worked for 8 years as a custodian at Westby Area Schools before retiring. The past 16 years the couple has lived in Viroqua.

Lawrence enjoyed reading, gardening and the outdoors and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Harriet; 4 daughters Laura (Alan) Krome of Louisville, Kentucky, Cindy Haro of Palau, Micronesia, Lola (Chris) Fortney and Sandra (Loren) Favor both of Viroqua; grandchildren Amber (Scott) Mlynczak, Alex Fortney, Bethany (Jesse) Phillips, Ariel Fortney, Elliot Krome, Serena Favor, Isabel Krome and F. Logan Favor; great grandchildren Elizabeth Moran Fortney, Colby Mlynczak, Clayton Mlynczak and Sawyer Phillips; a sister-in-law Anita White of Coon Rapids, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers and 4 sisters.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday January 22, 2011 at the Reetz-Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua with Rev. Kathy Ingbritsen officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery in Esofea. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from noon until service time.
