Joyce Ann (Berg) Temp, age 92, of Coon Valley, WI, peacefully passed away on Saturday, October 10 at Emplify Health System by Gundersen. She was born on October 8, 1934 to Agnes (Strupp) and John Berg and grew up on the farm on North Ridge above Coon Valley. Joyce attended Westby schools, graduating in 1952. After high school she worked at the Rubber Mills in La Crosse for a number of years and then worked as a receptionist at Gundersen Lutheran, in La Crosse.
Through a mutual friend, she met Marvin Temp in April of 1955 after he was out of the service for the U.S. military. They married on September 6, 1958 in Coon Valley.
They lived in La Crosse through 1955 before moving to Madison for 5 years while Marv attended Graduate School. Thereafter they moved to Stevens Point for 30 years as Marv taught in the Biology Department at UW-Stevens Point. While living in Stevens Point, Joyce worked for an insurance company for many years, then a trophy business followed by a T-Shirt printing business out of their home. After Marv retired from teaching, they moved back to Coon Valley in July 1996 and built a house on North Ridge, just down the road from Joyce’s home farm and have been there for 30 years.
Joyce was a member of the Coon Valley Lutheran WELCA group and Coon Valley American Legion Post 116 Auxiliary. She was also a part of the North Ridge Bunco group. She enjoyed family fishing trips up north, traveling across the country to places such as Texas, Florida, Alaska and Canada. Just about every Friday Night they would go out to eat with family and friends for fish and a drink. She also enjoyed family gatherings, outings with friends, vodka tonics, playing cards, tending flowers, sewing and knitting, decorating spaces, shopping, and every moment in between.
Family was the most important thing to Joyce. Joyce and Marv treated their nieces and nephews along with all the great nieces and nephews as their own, always providing a tasty treat, a great time and some kind of crazy story with a good laugh.
Her health started declining about 5 years ago, with various surgeries and treatments, and a diagnosis of dementia which contributed to her slow decline in her health status. Though she may have been struggling with her health, she was still her spunky, goofy and spirited self.
She is survived by her husband Marvin Temp, brother and sister-in-law Gordon and Janet Temp, sister-in-law Judy Temp and many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Jack (Shirley) Berg, Ken (Yvonne) Berg, Richard (Rachel) Berg; sister Mary (David) Elsen, sister-in-law Carol Molzahn, a niece Shari Berg; a nephew Bryan Berg, and a great niece Lauren Berg.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 16 at the Coon Valley Lutheran Church. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in the church cemetery followed by a luncheon. Condolences may be given at selandsfuneralhome.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Coon Valley Lutheran Church or the Coon Valley American Legion Post 116 Auxiliary.
