John L. Gilbertson

John L. Gilbertson, 79 of La Crosse and formerly of Chaseburg, died Monday December 22, 2025. He attended school in Chaseburg and graduated from Westby High School in 1964. John enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967 and served stateside in the 101st Airborne Division. He was deployed to Vietnam, where he served 15 months. John married Sharon Souchek on August 16, 1969, at the First Presbyterian Church in La Crosse. He worked at the Cooler Company, sold insurance, the Chaseburg Co-op followed by Gateway Foods (Fleming) for many years.

John was a member of the Chaseburg American Legion and the Coon Creek VFW. He enjoyed fishing and spending time family, especially his grandson, Silas. He was also an avid Packer, Badger and Brewer fan.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon; daughter, Heidi (Mat) Gilbertson Grewe and Sara (Lance) Gilbertson Ley; grandson, Silas Ley; brother, Steve (Ann) Gilbertson and many cousins, other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday December 26, 2025, at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley with a prayer service at 2:45. Burial with military honors will be in the Middle Coon Valley Lutheran Cemetery. Condolences may be given at selandsfuneralhome.com.
