Harold A. Wemette

Harold A. Wemette, 81 of La Crosse, passed away Wednesday September 2, 2026 after a lengthy and valiant battle with cancer. Harold was born in Chicago on March 17, 1945 the third of nine sons born to William and Betty (Knutson) Wemette. Most of his life was spent in the Coon Valley and Westby area. Grade school and confirmation in Coon Valley and then graduating from Westby High School.

Harold worked at Caterpillar in Illinois for a short time and returned home to work at Trane Co. in La Crosse as a machinist and then in Quality Control as an inspector. He was so proud of his 41 years of work at Trane. Harold married Linda E. Olson on October 14, 1967. They were blessed with 2 boys and a daughter, Jon, Julie and Jim. Harold loved his family, sometimes working 2 jobs to provide a new home and a good life for them.

Harold enjoyed all the cars he owned, especially his white Pontiac GTO and his two Chevy Colorado trucks. He played a lot of cards – euchre and poker, enjoyed bowling (Timber Coulee Antelope Society), riding our Harley Trike, eating out and traveling with Barney and Judy. Later in life, being a man of few words and little socializing, he enjoyed sitting in his recliner “watching the leaves fall”, the changing weather and all the dog walkers on our street.

Harold is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter, Julie (Joe) Kauss; 6 grandchildren, Jacob and Justin Wemette, Jade and Karly Wemette and Joe and Jamison Kauss; 11 great grandchildren; brothers, David, Joe (Deborah), Dan (Irene) and Robert; sisters-in-law, Darlene (David) Starch and Judy Wemette; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Jon and Jim; his parents, William and Betty; in-laws, Leo and Leona Olson; brothers, Gary, Roger “Barney”, infant brothers, William (first born) and Richard (Robert’s twin). He was recently preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Betty (David) Wemette.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday September 12, 2026 at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until service time. Condolences may be given at selandsfuneralhome.com.
