George A. Johnston

George A. Johnston, 80, of Stoddard and Casa Grande, Ariz. died peacefully surrounded by his family Thursday September 27, 2012 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. He was born February 8, 1932 to Philip and Daisy (Murray) Johnston in Wall, South Dakota. George served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Marit True in 1958 and she preceded him in death in 1973. He was a barber and then worked for 20 years at Gundersen Lutheran. George married Doris Aspeslet in 1983 and together they enjoyed many years traveling in their motor home. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, walking, playing bingo and rooting for the Vikings. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Matthew's Ev. Lutheran Church in Stoddard.

Survivors include his wife Doris; a son Mark of La Crosse; two daughters Kathryn (Webb) Steiner of Mankato, Minn. and Nancy (Jim) Reasor of Eagle Lake, Minn.; 6 step children Lynn (Glenn) Piurkowski, Laurie Woodhouse, Tim (Tammy) Aspeslet, Kathy Jensen, David Aspeslet and Kristie (Jan) Protsman; 24 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and two brothers Philip (Miriam) and Frank (Barbara), a sister-in-law Pat, a brother-in-law Arlen (Irene) Lehrke and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and first wife; he was preceded in death by a daughter Carolyn, a son-in-law Dale Jensen, a brother Burt and nephews Michael Johnston and Peter Lehrke.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday October 1, 2012 at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stoddard. Rev. Phillip Arnold will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until service time. Memorials may be given to St. Matthew's School or Luther High School.
