Frederick Halverson

Frederick Halverson, 94 formerly of West Prairie and North Branford, Connecticut died Sunday November 13, 2011 at the home of his nephew David (Toni) Felde, rural Stoddard, where he had lived the past 3 years. He was born September 8, 1917 in West Prairie the youngest and last surviving of six siblings born to Allen and Bertha Halverson. Frederick was a part of the West Prairie Store and Northwest Prairie Lutheran Church community in his younger years. He attended Tewelt School and Viroqua High School and received an A.B. degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa in 1939. He was a Pfeiffer Fellow at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore from 1939 to 1943, receiving a Senior Award from American Cyanamid Company and was a Visiting Scientist at Cambridge University for the 1957-58 academic year. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi and was a member of the American Chemical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry, American Physical Society and Optical Society of America. Dr. Halverson started working as a chemist at the American Cyanamid Company Stamford Research Laboratories in 1946 and became a Senior Research Fellow before retiring in 1982. From 1943 until 1946 he was a member of the Chemistry Department Faculty at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Frederick married Edith Lynn on April 2, 1946 in Baltimore, MD. They enjoyed many trips abroad through the years plus their travels in the US.

Frederick lived in Stamford, Connecticut from 1946 until Edith's death in 1994, at which time he moved to North Branford, Connecticut. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford for many years, serving as a Deacon and Elder.

Frederick and his wife Edith were lovingly committed to the support of his Midwest nephews and their families and they in turn were blessed to have been a part of their lives these past years.

Survivors include his nephews David (Toni) Felde of Stoddard and Robert (Martha) Felde of Decorah, Iowa; great nieces Tiffany (Peter) Felde Rahn of Fort Atkinson, Kathryn Felde of London, England, Jackson and Brenda Felde of Decorah, Iowa and great great nephew and niece Wesley and Haylee Rahn

He was preceded in death by his wife Edith Lynn Halverson; his parents; sisters Inga, Aleda, Helen and Ruth and his brothers Alfred and one in infancy.

Services and burial will take place at the Long Ridge Cemetery in Stamford, Connecticut at a later date. The Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley is assisting the family.
